Heptagons are polygonal shapes with seven sides.
But–why heptagons, you might ask? They have an uneven number of sides. They don’t stack nicely like hexagons or octagons, or even squares, but have to be jumbled together in ways that are higgledy-piggledy.
To which I say, Exactly. I’ve created artwork with hexagons. They’re very nice and well-behaved. They remind me quite forcefully of honeycomb (which is great–if you’re looking for something sweet and sticky). But when I created this design, honey was the last thing on my mind. I wanted to play with a shape that required me to really work with it, to experiment and be creative. This shape fit the bill. I love how the overall design turned out. It reminds me of grains of sand under a microscope.
